Our Dear friend Janet took this pic of us, here in Colombia~
Thought that I'd take you down memories lane with me. My Phillip grew up in between AZ and MI, moving back and forth through his younger years. But he spent his high school years in Michigan, and became best friends with Matt J. When it came time for them to go to college, Matt went to Hobe and Phillip went to GBS. At Hobe, one of my dear friends, Kimberly N. and Matt became good friends. Phillip went to GBS the year before I did. I visited GBS several times that year, but since Phillip lived and worked off campus he never saw me. The IHC before I went to GBS as a freshman, my friend Kimberly told me about Phillip and told me that she thought that we'd make a good couple. =) AND GOOD OLE MATT called Phillip twice the summer before I came and told him the same thing...that he thought that we would make a great couple, and told Phillip to look me up. Since Phillip's Dad was the maintenance man at GBS at that time, Phillip was working with him in the boy's dorm...on the day that I arrived. He had casually told the guys that he was working with that his friend had told him to look me up...but that he had no clue who I was. Right then I walked by and he said something about that being a new girl...and the guys recognized me from visiting GBS the year before and told him that that was the Heather he wanted to look up. So, he watched me for 2 weeks or so, and I had NO CLUE he was in the world...for he lived and worked off campus and was a Sophmore, not a freshman, so he was not around. At the end of the 2 weeks we started becoming friends...but I still did not think about this guy being the "Phillip" that Kimberly had told me about. A few days after he asked me to the Freshman picnic...we were chatting and he mentioned his best friend Matt...and I let out a squeal and said, "Oh, now I remember, you are the one that Kimberly told me about!"...and then he told me that Matt had told him about me too. Before I came to college, I had talked to my Heavenly Father about the guy that I was to date. I asked him to protect me from the wrong man...and that IF IT WAS HIS WILL...to please help the man that asked me to the picnic to be my mate for life! AND THAT'S WHAT HAPPENED! (But I kept THAT SECRET between me and God and stayed close to God, to be careful that this was the man for me.) After dating for 18 months...he asked me to marry him on APRIL FOOLS DAY 1994...but Thank the Lord he wasn't fooling around, he was SERIOUS. =) His gift to me was an AWESOME, HUGE picture that he drew of me...all dots...it took him 50 hours during Mid-term exams at GBS. He is an amazing artist...and I TREASURE his gift to me. When we came back to GBS from our spring break...(when we had gotten engaged in South Dakota visting my parents) I got soooo sick of the "I FEEL SORRY FOR YOU LOOKS"...when I'd tell my friends that Phillip drew a picture of me for an engagement gift. So, Dad D. and I put up an easel in the GBS kitchen and left my picture on display for 3 days...and I never received any more "Poor You" looks or comments. =)
~This is the best pic I have of the portrait that Phillip drew of me (BUT THIS PICTURE DOES NOT DO IT JUSTICE!)...my parents are keeping my treasure for me while we are serving God in Colombia.~
We got married June 6th, 1995....and so really soon we have been married for 12 wonderful years!!!!....Thanks to our DEAR friends Matt J. and Kimberly N. =)

What an amazing love story! It is soooo wonderful how God plans our lives and leads us to the right person! Thanks for sharing!!
I remember that picture! He is very talented -- you 2 are such a great couple!
Had to come check this out before leaving this morning:) Definately don't deserve any credit, but so thankful how things worked out..and the beautiful life you've created together. Love Ya'll!
Heather,
I am amazed by specific prayers that get answered. God saw the sincerity of your heart and gave you your desires. HE is awesome.
Love,
Aunt Linda
You guys make a great couple! And have produced some darling kids!
Beautiful picture...
I love that picture! But, the picture of the picture doesn't do it justice....It is even more beautiful in person. It is a piece of art that can't have a price tag! I so remember 12 years ago! Beautiful wedding! (I left my luggage on the steps of the girls dorm when we were leaving!) My suitcase had to be mailed to me!
Neat Heather. I didn't know all of the details of your dating. I do remember the Gorgeous pictures though! Has he done any of your children yet? ;-) in his spare time of course
sarahxoxo6=)
Most ladies can't say that their Man spent 50 hrs. buying a gift for them. It is so special because you know who he was thinking about the whole time. What a treasure! I would love to see the original :) Thanks for sharing such a neat love story.
Susan would love to be thin. Cute comment from Sarah.
What a handsome couple!
We are so glad that God had this all planned out. We love you all!
Beautiful!-both picture and story. God does work in amazing ways. I too am praying about a husband. At first I prayed that God would help be to recognize the "wolf in sheep's clothing" so that I wouldn't get involved with the wrong guy. Then God said, "Pray to recognize the sheep." As you know I am still looking! Wouldn't it be funny if I found a guy who's last name is Shepherd?
I love the area on your web site titled About God. What a great way to get the message of salvation out.

Heather;
Thanks for the story. I actually remember when Marty left her suitcase at your wedding. :) My hubby bought me antique china for an engagement gift. I worked at an office, and when the people asked to see my engagement ring I explained that we didn't wear jewelry and told them about my gift. One man laughed and said, "are you gonna wear a tea cup around your neck?" I had to laugh. It's a beautiful gift Philip gave you, but please don't try wearing it around your neck. :)
Heather,
I enjoyed your "Love Story" post so much. Beautiful picture. Thanks for sharing.
I loved reading "your" story; so glad you shared.
Yes, the photo doesn't do justice; I recall seeing the original while visiting you in AZ.
I loved the idea of the drawing! I remember asking Troy that when we got engaged would he please not buy me a "silly engagement watch." :-)
What a beautiful gift! I can't believe people felt sorry for you! How precious to have something so personal and from the heart!
What a beautiful picture.I never got to see it in the kitchen...I came a year after you all were married. I can't imagine people feeling sorry for you...that's such a heart-felt gift. I think you should somehow get it reproduced and hang it in your house down there. That way you and your kids could enjoy it and still the original would be in safe keeping as well. Hope you're having a good day!
Thanks Nancy and Les for your nice comments. The reason people felt sorry for me, was cause they DID NOT KNOW that Phillip as an artist and could not imagine him drawing a portrait good enough to be an engagement gift! But after they saw it, they didn't feel sorry for me anymore!
Love, Heather =)
