OK...I'm going out on a limb and am posting an old family recipe. Now when I say that this is a family recipe...it
TRULY IS A F-A-M-I-L-Y RECIPE. You see...from what I understand my Great Grandmother who lived in Tenn.
INVENTED this recipe (from the ingredients that she had on hands) as a way to feed her 7 children during the Great Depression. (Believe it or not, I just saw a request for this recipe in the latest Taste of Home...from a lady in Tenn. who had tasted it years ago and wanted the recipe.=) When my husband first got into our family and tasted this, he wasn't sure he was impressed (his family is not really a choc. eater...and my family is!) However, he tells me now that he has acquired a taste for it and really likes it. This is something that our family makes anywhere from once a week (My brother Andrew makes this for his family every Sunday morning) to once every 2 or 3 months or so. We love the salty taste of the biscuits, with the sweet, but not tooo sweet chocolate pudding. If you try this and your family doesn't like it, I'm sorry, just mark it down as a new experience... that you don't want to repeat. =D But if your family falls in love with it like our family has, then you can Thank my dear Great Grandmother who is probably making Soppy Chocolate in Heaven about right now. =D
~Soppy Chocolate and biscuits~
~SOPPY CHOCOLATE~
Mix together dry in a large pan:
1 cup sugar
4 Tab. cocoa
1 cup flour
Add:
2 cups water
2 cups evap. OR plain milk
1 teas. salt
Boil until thick. stirring frequently (it likes to stick). TURN HEAT OFF...and Add 1/2 stick of butter (OR marg.) and 1 teas. vanilla. Stir until butter is melted and mixed in well. Serve HOT...over HOT HOMEMADE BISCUITS...OR you could buy the frozen biscuits and bake them.
I like to serve sausage or bacon with Soppy Choc., and a glass of milk...it helps balance the sweet choc. (though I think you'll find that the choc. pudding is not as sweet as you will think it would be.) For those of you who know Bro. Steve Hight (and know he LOVES CHOCOLATE... you might be interested in knowing that he got this recipe from our family years ago, and from what I understand likes to make it every now and then. =) If you try it and like it, please leave me a comment, so I'll know that our family tradition is being enjoyed elsewhere. =)

I'm sure my kids would love this recipe! Yum. Anything with chocolate is good!
David was looking at your blog last week and when I peeked over his shoulder and saw the picture of you in the pink shirt, I thought it was a joke! I thought you had put something in your shirt to be silly! You're looking adorable and very healthy. So glad God is taking good care of you! We will pray that baby will wait. I know that's a big issue for you.
Dad & I have never tasted your Soppy Chocolate with biscuits. They look and sound good and it was interesting to see the recipe, as I had no idea what was in the chocolate gravy. You are a beautiful little expectant Slenderella and we are looking forward to seeing what our next adorable grandchild will be like. All your babies, so far, have never disappointed us. :--) Love, Mom D
Yes, we do like the Soppy Chocolate. I haven't had it for a while though. Dad fixed it not long ago when Melinda was home for the holidays but I missed out :o( - they didn't even save me any! I've had the recipe but just haven't made it.
We got that recipe from your mom back in the 90's when we visited them in Dakota. It is a family favorite. We like it on waffles too.
That would be "South" Dakota. (<:
YUM! Anything with chocolate gets my attention!
P.S. Speaking of your mom, reading Kathy's comment reminded me of my visit to her in South Dakota when I went to P.C. Bible Methodist school. I was very impressed by her... she was so sweet!
Thank you for sharing this recipe! I am always on the lookout for great recipes. Your blog always delivers (smile)
Vonnie raves about it! I have never tasted it, although my Grandaddy Agan used to make chocolate "dumplins'" when I was a little girl.
Yes we call that choc gravey.. YUMMYYY it is so good.. deff a southern thang.. hehe.. So how is everything going heather?? I pray for y'all daily and hope all turns out well . Tell the family we said hello!!
Next to Mexican food southern style foods are my favorite. Choc. is always a winner! Frankie doesn't like choc. Must be a chemical imbalance, don't you think? Take care. Love, Lee
A good friend from TN introduced me to this recipe..She calls it "chocolate gravy"! It is SOOOOOO yummy! I bet it would be fun to serve because it is so different! Hope that you are doing great! Take good care of yourself!
Well I love biscuits and choc so I will have to try this one it looks yummy!
THank you for that recipe...the idea of one waffles sounds yum!
Tee Hee... I love Lee's comment! Is she in Arizona.?
I've not had Soppy Choc..... I love choc. but I don't know about putting it on biscuits. I'll take a family poll before I fix it! :)
Blessings,
Lori R.
Hey Heather,
I fixed this for our breakfast this morning (Saturday). Everyone liked it and my 3 year old kept eating and eating it. He loves anything sweet. And for those who may read this comment, it's not chocolate gravy... it's more like hot, home-made pudding. So it's nice to have leftovers to put into pudding containers for the kiddos to eat later.
Kim, I do love eating it by itself too if there are leftovers! And you are right, it is like chocolate pudding!
Don't take a poll, don't think about it, just TRY it. It is awesome. When you call it chocolate gravy it makes it sound disgusting. It is chocolate pudding and biscuits. It is enough to make me want to die and go to heaven so I can kiss Andrew and Heather's great grandmother. :) And that's all I have to say about that...... :)
What'd I tell you? She raves...love ya, Von!
Sorry...Vonnie! Didn't mean to disgust you with the "chocolate gravy" comment...That's just what my friend called it! ha! My husband had serious reservations until he tasted it! It is very good!
Ronda,
I wasn't disgusted at you... no need to apologize. :) I just don't want somebody calling it choc. gravy... that is what I first heard it called and I didn't want to try it. But, as you can tell, I love it now!! See, my sis in law Melodie hears me rave. :)
I'd rather have the soppy chocolate than the Red Eye gravy!!! I've not made this recipe, simply because I do NOT want to share with the rest of the family and know that I would have to!!! :) Thanks for reminding me of it...maybe I should have Grandmother call me the next time she makes it and I can run over!
I have tried this recipe, people, I am not a fan! :-) I am a chocaholic, but sweet pudding on a flaky, buttery, salty biscuit should be outlawed, no matter how much my sister, Vonnie, raves. :-)
Okay, since everyone (almost) raves about this recipe, I tried it! I must admit that it tastes better than it sounds! It wasn't a big "hit" for our family, but was okay. It reminded us of chocolate frosted donuts but weren't as sweet or greasy. Thanks for sharing.
Heather, This makes me "homesick" for a apartment full of loud children and adults....eating soppy chocolate!!!!! I'm happy to be apart of this wonderful family!
Marty
Yes, Lori, Lee & Frank H, live in Arizona. Lee's comment made me laugh. I loved these comments about this "Soppy" Chocolate recipe. They were interesting to read. After Vonnie's comment, I couldn't wait to taste this. After Janette C's comment, I thought, "Maybe not". Of course, I want to try this when Heather makes it. Love, Mom D
Heather, I dont think I have met you in person but I really enjoy reading your blog!
We REALLY enjoyed the recipe for the soppy chocolate. Thanks for sharing!
Hi Heather. I'm just trying to get caught up on your blog on one of the days I'm feeling good (Praise the Lord!). You know what, chocolate gravy and biscuits is a tradition in many southern families--it is in all the branches of my family. My mother used to make it for our family, and I used to make it for my family. I used to make it from memory, but it's been so long I don't know if I could now. My cousin put the recipe on our family site on myfamily.com a few years ago though for safe keeping for our descendants. Your recipe sounds incredibly close to our recipe--but part of my family, the Overtons, moved to Arkansas from Tennessee in the 1800's so who knows?
I remember the first time I was introduced to this. TRY Conference in 1983. I was expecting Melanie. I think I passed that time!
