~Sunday morning Doughnuts~

I found this recipe in the April/May 2009 Taste of Home. However, it is obvious that whoever named it, DOES NOT attend church on Sunday mornings. For no one would have time to make these doughnuts and be in their pew on time for church to start. (Unless you got up at 4:00 AM. =) I do not have a doughnut cutter, so I was going to use a cup for the round outside part of the doughnut...but I asked my husband what I could use to cut out the CENTER of the donuts. Our oldest daughter Kimberly heard my question and came up with a pretty clever idea...a water bottle lid. We had GREAT pictures of me cutting the donuts, of Noah and Phillip frying them, and of Sarah powder sugaring them, (Kimberly was working on another project) but alas...I accidently ERASED all of those pics. GRRR! =( Anyways...these doughnuts are yummy if you are up to making them. They aren't hard, just time consuming.~
~Sunday morning Donuts~
4 1/2 to 5 cups all purpose flour
1 1/4 cups sugar
4 teasp. baking powder
1 teasp. salt
3 eggs, beaten
1 cup milk
1/4 cup oil
2 Tab. orange juice (I didn't use this)
4 teasp. orange peel (I didn't use this)
Oil for deep-fat frying
Confections' sugar
In a large bowl, combine 4 1/2 cups flour, sugar, baking powder and salt. Combine the eggs, milk, oil, orange juice and peel; stir into dry ingredients just until moistened. Stir in enough remaining flour to form a soft dough. Cover and refrigerate for at least an hour. Turn onto a floured surface; roll to 1/2 thickness. Cut with a floured 2 1/2" doughnut cutter. In an electric skillet, or deep fat fryer heat oil to 375. (I just used regular skillet) Fry doughnuts a few at a time until golden brown on both sides. Drain on paper towels, dust with confections' sugar. (Powdered sugar)

Sounds and looks yummy. I've wanted to try to make doughnuts sometime. I'll have to try this recipe. Are they more light and airy or more of a cake doughnut? I love stuff like this. Have you ever tried soft pretzels? I have a very simple recipe and they always turn out so good.

Glad to be back home and can take some time catch up on your blog. The donuts sound and look yummy. That baby sleeping with his Daddy looks more like Noah that the little fellow we sent away so long ago. How we miss all of you. I love you, Moma

You're a dolly for keeping up such regular posts on your blog. I love them all because it lets me see what you guys are doing daily. I am SAD that you lost all those precious time-consuming pictures you took of the donut making session!!!
The countdown's getting lower every day for your trip to Phoenix! Dad got electricity hooked up to our fifth-wheel trailer so we can have lights and a/c in it. Love, Mom D
